Beauty and The Buzz
Could an Affair Cost a Potential Elected Official a Political Election? by The Average Guy
When an elected official has an affair, it makes headlines. Yet, they do it all the time. Within the last year, two mayors in California's largest cities have come forward an said that they were involved in affairs with women other than their wives. Why does this happen to elected officials so much? You're probably wincing at the use of the words 'happen to'. You think I'm letting them off the hook. I'm not.
Power is an aphrodisiac unlike any other. Power and money attract beautiful women like honey attracts bees. It is not the person that that has the power that they want. It is the trappings of power that they desire. They want to be right in the mix of the power. They want a title. Mrs. Mayor? That'll do.
But, what causes the guys to go after the women? Well, have you taken a look at most politicians? Have you ever taken a closer look at a politician's ego? Let me tell you. Most politicians were the student council geeks in high school. They are not the football players or basketball palyers. They are the smart guys. The do gooders. They grow up craving attention and approval. Other than being a rock star or athlete, politics is the sure fire way to get it.
So, once they get the approval, they seek to validate that they have succeeded. Some actually try to see what they can get away with. I think this is what happened with Bill Clinton. No one can tell me that he thought Monica Lewinsky was his dream girl. No way. She was there and available and he thought that he was entitled to take what was offered.
This is the same with the Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and San Francisco Mayor of Gavin Newsom. But more so with Newsom. His affair took a special kind of man. He was in the process of a divorce, so whether he cheated is in question. However, what is not in question is that he abused a friendship with his long time aide when he chose to cheat with his aide's wife.
Most politicians don't get divorced and then move on to another woman. They have the affair, get caught and then move on. The reason is that many of these men think that a divorce will ruin their image as good family men. But, they cause incalculable damage to their families and their images when they are unfaithful.
I guess the lesson is that these people, although they are in high profile jobs, are like all others. They are silly, stupid, vulnerable and egocentric. They lack impulse control. They seek approval. But, they do it while running huge governments and having camera's in their faces.
