MATCH.COM RAPIST FACES TRIAL! by Associated Press
by The Associated Press
A 33-year-old Philadelphia man, who met women on a popular online dating service then used date-rape drugs to incapacitate them, is facing trial on nine rape counts involving eight different women in Pennsylvania. He also faces rape charges in Sun Valley, Idaho.
In a preliminary hearing in Philadelphia, witnesses said Jeffrey J. Marsalis posed as a doctor, astronaut and spy on the online dating site Match.com who would meet dates at upscale bars and restaurants.
"This guy is not shy. He's confident. He's plotting," Capt. John Darby told reporters. "He showed IDs to a lot of these women supporting the various roles, positions that he seemingly held. He really put on a hell of a show."
His victims testified that they would become abnormally intoxicated after returning from the bathroom or after letting Marsalis buy them a drink from the bar. They would wake up later at his apartment, sometimes undressed and sometimes during sex.
Held Without Bond
"It was like waking up from surgery," one woman testified. "My body was there, and I could see what was going on around me, but I couldn't move."
None of the victims in the current trial contacted police after their encounters with Marsalis. They were contacted by police after they seized his computer in an earlier case. Marsalis was acquitted in three similar cases in Philadelphia in January, but was arrested before he left the courtroom on the current charges.
He has been held without bond since his January arrest.
