What Can Benjamin Franklin Teach Us About Love and Dating? by Kerry L. Gray - The Love Doctor

What can a guy like Benjamin Franklin teach us about bettering our lives, ladies? Turns out, at age 79, Ben went on a search for personal growth. He came up with 13 virtues, which he deemed necessary for each human being to achieve moral perfection. Are these virtues relevant in today's society? As we begin a new year, it is a great time to reflect on our lives and how we can improve ourselves -- for our own personal growth, for our loved ones, for our friends and for the communities we live, work and play in.

Temperance: moderation, self-restraint, self-control.

Silence: absence of sound or noise, stillness, quiet.

Order: direction, instruction, command; the proper disposition of things to other things in relation to their purpose and to each other.

Resolution: solution, accommodation or settling of a problem; to reduce or convert to a simple form and determine a course of action.

Frugality: economical use, saving, not wasteful, thrifty, careful.

Industry: energetic, devoted activity to any work or task.

Sincerity: freedom from lies, deceit or hypocrisy; to be truthful.

Justice: to be right, fair and lawful; to appreciate properly.

Moderation: to avoid extremes or excess; restraint.

Cleanliness: state of being free from dirt; pure, innocent; without flaws, roughness or irregularity; good sportsmanship; a fresh and wholesome quality.

Tranquility: state of being calm, peaceful, quiet and serene.

Chastity: the state of being pure and decent; not engaging in relations of questionable moral character; free from obscenity; neat, clean.

Humility: having a modest opinion of yourself and a humble estimate of your importance in life; to be meek and appreciative, not prideful.

Benjamin Franklin created elaborate charts to grade his progress in each of these virtues. He knew that personal growth was a matter of taking distinctive, small steps and moving through the process of change, little by little, day by day. You can chart your own personal growth by writing down what these virtues mean to you and how you can apply them in your life. Keeping a diary and journaling your progress is healing and inspirational. We all want to be the best that we can be. Improving yourself will profoundly affect all the people around you. You will grow personally and spiritually as you effect positive and healing change in yourself and in others. Happy New Year! -- Kerry L. Gray
