Are You Getting Ready to Have a Baby? by Kerry Gray

Are you thinking about having a baby? Wondering what you should do first?

Here is a quick checklist to get you started!

Get screened and treated for sexually transmitted diseases. Untreated diseases like chlamydia or gonorrhea are the number one cause of infertility. They often have no symptoms. Get tested and treated to insure your chances of being able to get pregnant when you are ready to.

Do not stay stressed out. While you cannot avoid stress, being constantly stressed out
can interrupt ovulation. When you are stressed, your body goes into "fight or flight" mode and produces lots of adrenaline and cortisol. These two hormones tell your body it is not a good time to get pregnant, so get your stress under control. The easiest and fastest way to handle stress is regular exercise.

Maintain a healthy weight. Having a body that is too thin or too fat affects your estrogen level. This can influence your ability to get pregnant. Research shows that junk food, animal protein, fats and sugars might play a role in infertility. Reduce these foods in your diet. Replace them with rice, whole grains, beans, nuts, fruits and vegetables. Every woman of child bearing age should take a vitamin supplement that contains folic acid. Most vitamin formulas contain this; read your label. Folic acid is known to prevent
some severe and heart-breaking birth defects, so add this supplement to your daily routine.

Stop smoking now. Smoking makes you twice as likely to not be able to get pregnant right away. Smoking also increases your odds of not being able to conceive by thirty percent. While alcohol intake has not been shown to affect fertility, it is recommended to drink no alcohol while you are pregnant due to the possible effects on the developing baby. Examine these two habits and make changes before trying to get pregnant.

Plan your pregnancies according to your age. No lifestyle or habit changes can change the fact that your ability to conceive drops with age. A woman's peak fertility time is in her early twenties, and decreases over time. After the age of 35, your ability to become pregnant decreases rapidly with each passing year.

See your doctor to discuss changes in your menstrual cycle and hormone levels in relation to your advancing age and your desire to have a baby some day.

Think about financial decisions and your plans for after the baby comes. Babies are expensive. Returning to work and putting your baby in day care can be stressful and hard on everyone. Think about how you might stay home longer, for even a few years, to reduce the stress on yourself and your newborn. Try to put off having the baby until your finances, medical leave and decisions like who will keep the baby are settled. Some planning and decision making now can save you stress and worry later.

Having a baby is a miraculous, life changing event. Your uterus will grow from the size of a tennis ball to the size of a watermelon, or even larger! Guard your ability to get pregnant later with some simple planning and health evaluations now. See your doctor early to go over any health concerns you have before trying to get pregnant.
