Give More Than You Receive in a Relationship! by The Average Guy

Matthew Boggs and Jason Miller have written a groundbreaking book call 'project Everlasting'. The book details the marriage secrets of 'marriage masters', couples that have been married 40 or more years. The guys were recently on the Today show where they revealed the secrets to a long and committed marriage.

We have been reviewing the secrets over the past few days and adding our thoughts and views on each secret to success.

5. You've Got to Give It Up. The marriage masters say that giving more than you take is essential to a healthy marriage and that you should expect to give more than you get back.

I learned this many years ago in a troubled relationship. The person I was dating could never apologize for anything. They were always right and I was always wrong. Even when I was right, I had to apologize for 'whatever' so that we could get the relationship back on track. As I spoke to a friend that was a mental health professional, he told me to forget about relationships being 50/50. He said that a relationship could be 70/30 where you are giving a lot more than you are taking.

The important point is that BOTH people have to do the same thing. It is not a sacrifice and it is not something that you have to do while gritting your teeth. In fact, you could be motivated for purely selfish reasons. Every person that I've talked to about this subject says the same thing. If you give, give, give, you will get more back in the health of your relationship and for yourself.

The modern generations have been fed a diet of me, me, me! When I was a young boy, I remember that the book, Looking out for Number 1, was a big seller. I saw it in all the book stores. Today, companies have to hire people to come in and teach people how to act as a team. Teamwork doesn't come naturally. It takes effort!

Oh, but what a payoff at the end: A happy relationship. So, go home and give something to your mate. If you just give your mate 30 minutes to do whatever they want to do, that's a lot. Try it and see what happens.
