DDHG Warns Women About the Sweetheart Swindler! Be on the Look Out!
From Tampa Bay 10 News on May 13, 2008 -
Holiday, Florida - Theresa Reid remembers the very day in May of 2006 when she says she received an e-mail through an internet dating service from 38-year-old Rob Padilla. She was living in West Virginia at the time.
Reid says, "This one (e-mail) came in. It said 'Hello gorgeous'."
Reid says Padilla told her he was self employed and was the captain of his own charter boat.
He explained that he was educated at Florida State University and he was a decorated Army Ranger that fought in Kuwait. The two hit it off and maintained a long distance relationship for a little over a year.
In August of 2007, Theresa says she decided to move closer to Padilla. "I picked up everything that I owned, loaded it up into a truck and I towed my vehicle on a car trailer to Florida 820 miles."
Theresa says she was excited about starting a life with a man Betty Luska says she was engaged to marry just one month later on Friday, September 21, 2007. Betty says the invitations had already been mailed out and RSVP cards were coming back. Theresa says she had no idea.
Betty and Theresa met for the first time while sharing details with Tampa Bay's 10 of the relationships they say they shared with Rob Padilla. Betty says, "He told us all the same things just with slight variations."
Betty says her fiancé Rob had a nickname for her. "He'd text me all the time and call me "Mrs. P" which he apparently did to everybody else."
You can ask Pam Shearer about that. She lives near Jacksonville now. "He'd call me in the morning and he'd say 'Good morning Mrs.P'."
Pam was also planning to marry Rob just one month after Betty was set to tie the knot with him. She says her wedding date was set for October 27th, 2007. Pam says, "I'm convinced that he's been doing this for a long time and he's gotten really good at it."
The women say Rob's way of juggling all three of them was to come up with outlandish stories of tragedy like saying his mother died of a heart attack.
Betty says, "He's crying and everything about his mom and they're so close and everything and he's got to fly to Spain so he can't come to see me."
Pam says, "It almost became a joke between me and my roommate at the time. 'Don't make plans with Rob because someone will either get sick or die'."
The three ladies also say Rob was always in a panic, needing cash for some kind of dire emergency. Theresa says, "I wired him a thousand dollars through Western Union."
Pam says, "He probably owes me about three thousand."
The bottom line; Tampa Bay's 10 News uncovered that Rob had six different women at one time, five in Florida and one in San Antonio. Betty Luska, however, believes the number is more like ten.
Either way there were obvious holes in Padilla's stories.
We checked and found that both of Rob Padilla's parents are alive and live in Orlando. He did not earn an MBA from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Authorities at Florida State University in Tallahassee say he never attended even one class there. As far as being an Army Ranger during Desert Storm and earning a bronze star for bravery? That isn't possible since Rob is a convicted felon.
In 1988, he was convicted of theft. In 1990, he was convicted of aggravated assault.
Operation Desert Storm started on January 17, 1991.
Tampa Bay's 10 obtained a mug shot from 2006 when authorities say Rob Padilla served jail time at the Campbell County Adult Detention Center in Rustburg, Virginia. Officials there say he was sentenced for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. He spent 51 days locked up there.
Betty says she knew of the jail term because Padilla told her about it.
These days the women we spoke with are banding together. They say they're trying to get the word out about their alleged experiences with Rob on DontDateHimGirl.com
Several of the women are also filing scheme to defraud charges against Padilla with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office in hopes of getting their money back. The detective working the case says she can't comment on details of the investigation yet because it's still an open case.
Theresa has already won a judgment against Rob in Pasco County for $2,146.27.
Meanwhile, Betty says allowing Rob to live with her left her in financial ruins because he only worked as a bartender sporadically. She says she is in the process of filing for bankruptcy.
Theresa adds, "And I'm in Florida working two jobs trying to keep my head above water."
On three separate occasions, Tampa Bay's 10 News hoped to talk to Rob Padilla during an on camera interview but each time he backed out.
He did release a written statement" "This is a case of a few ex's trying to portray me as a scammer. Three of the six relationships were strictly sexual with no promise of a relationship. While living with Betty Luska, I had made several of the new car payments, I contributed a minimum of $1200 per month towards mortgage and household...never borrowed a dime from her. I worked two jobs at one point and paid my OWN bills. I feel no incrimination whatsoever...I have said my apologies and the last time I checked, infidelity was NOT a crime."
Padilla says the women are harassing him and stressing him out so much that he recently blacked out, hit his head on a wall and got a concussion. He says he suffered a mild stroke and had to spend two days in the hospital recovering.
