We live in an age of distraction. We also live in a fast-paced hurry up and get there world. Our days are so busy with planning for the future we forget to live in the moment. We might not even remember how to live in the now.
Many women work, take care of their home, the kids, their husband, themselves, play, exercise, shop, attend social events and volunteer. Work, work, work. Run, run, run. Men don't have it much easier. They try to be do-it-all husbands and dads while getting ahead on the fast track at work. Their weekends are filled with honey-do lists.
They fit in a beer with their buddies whenever they can, but for lots of guys, a round of golf or time out with the boys is a thing of the past.
How can we slow down, seize the day and live in the present? It is ironic that our ability to achieve in the future is directly tied to our ability to pay attention to the present. Psychology Today gives us these six tips for living in the moment.
1. To improve your performance, stop thinking about it. Cultivate unselfconsciousness. You are not your thoughts, you are your actions. Pay attention to the now. Get busy acting instead of thinking, and just watch your thoughts go by.
2. To avoid worrying about the future, focus on the present. Enjoy what you are doing right this minute. Savor the moment. We plan for a beautiful vacation, then when we get there, we worry about whether we can come back some day. You're there.
3. To achieve a future with your significant other, stay in the present moment by breathing deeply. Taking deep breaths while you are with your loved one brings you back to the present and creates a here and now union with your partner. Try it. Breath.
4. To make the most of time, lose track of it. Flow with the moment. Stop looking at your watch and planning for your next move.
5. If something is bothering you, move toward it rather than away from it. This is acceptance. It is the fastest way to get over it.
6. Know that you don't know. Engage the unknown. Notice the new things in your landscape in every new situation.
Have you ever been lost in thought and forgotten what you were doing for several minutes, perhaps while driving or watching TV?
This is a small analogy for what will happen if you do not notice the present. Life will pass you by while you are lost in thought. Prevent this by noticing everything new in every situation.
The goal of these six steps it to create mindfulness, a state of active, open, intentional attention on the present. A lot of us do this on Saturdays when we are so busy doing errands and fun things to catch up on the week. Then we spend the other six days worrying. Guess what? What is your favorite day of the week? It is those Saturdays.
You can create peace and joy the other six days when you use these six tips to live in the moment. Cultivate and strive for unselfconsciousness, savoring, breathing, flowing, acceptance and engagement.
When your mind wanders bring yourself back by taking a deep breath. How do you feel at this moment? Mindfulness is not a destination, it is now. Sit back and relax and do nothing. You are already there. And don't forget to breathe.
