In the wee hours of Saturday morning, I celebrated my birthday with a midnight toast with friends.

According to my mother, I was born exactly on my due date -- July 19. And I made my world debut around 8 a.m. that Sunday morning. I never thought that the day of the week was significant, but come to find out, a Sunday birth is the rarest of arrivals.

Sunday is the least common day of the week to deliver, according to one of the National Vital Statistics Reports. Published in December by the Centers for Disease Control, the report analyzed birth rates for 2005.

That year, an average of 7,374 American babies were born each Sunday. By comparison, an average of 13,169 babies were born each Tuesday. Tuesday is traditionally the most popular day for births, with Saturday ranking sixth just above Sunday.

"The weekend deficit is evident for both vaginal and cesarean deliveries, but is notably larger for cesarean birth rates," the report reads.

Part of the unequal distribution is attributed to doctors' reluctance to schedule C-sections on the weekend, but there is no widely accepted explanation on why vaginal births also dip on the weekend.

I guess storks need a break, too.

Besides the day of the week for births, it seems that Mother Nature and Father Time collaborate for some other developments as well.

"Observed fertility rates," the report reads, "were at their highest in September and lowest in January, consistent with the well-established pattern of fertility rates peaking in the late summer before falling in the late fall and winter."

Aspiring mom and dads, the second half of summer starts Aug. 3.

As temperature rises, so does infidelity, survey proclaims.

Fertility might not be the only thing that peaks in the summer. According to a survey on DontDateHimGirl.com, acts of infidelity also soar during this time of year, giving a whole new meaning to the "dog days of summer."

The popular Web site, which is cyberspace's bathroom wall where scorned ex-lovers go to trash each other, polled men about commitment. Of course, there are material girls out there who may also engage in adulterous trysts, but this survey was strictly about the fellows.

Sixty-three percent of men admitted to cheating once during the summer without their partners knowing, said Web site founder Tasha Cunningham.

That was higher than any other time of year.

"During the summer, you can take a vacation with your wife and kids, but they (men) also take a lot of guys-only vacations," said Cunningham.

She added that bogus business trips and counterfeit conferences are other shams used to conceal affairs. "They're in another city. They can have their affair and come home without their wife ever knowing."

An article last year in USA Today ("Infidelity is in the air for road warriors") explored the connection between business travel and adultery. But since business travel occurs year-round, this does not necessarily support the summer peak theory.

The nationally recognized researchers on infidelity I contacted said they don't know of any scientific studies on the seasonality of infidelity.

"Most infidelity studies ask about infidelity over the lifetime or in the past year, so that they don't catch that," said Dr. Elizabeth Allen of the University of Colorado Denver.

But anecdotes abound on summerinfidelity.com. As part of her "Summer Infidelity Awareness Campaign," self-proclaimed affair detector Ruth Houston created the Web site. It advertises a free tip sheet on how to spot illicit flings, but I have yet to receive the promised e-mail.

Fortunately, no tip sheet can replace old-fashioned common sense and communication.

Cunningham, who has been married for almost two years, said before your significant other hits the road for a summer trip, discuss your expectations and renew your commitment to one another. Also, reserve a time, in advance, that the two of you will speak on the phone each night, she said.

And finally, a perpetual favorite -- a family photo with an attached love note tucked inside the traveler's suitcase. This just might provide the conscious tug that helps a potential cheater refocus on what's most important. -- Cathryn Stout
