Dear DDHG,
I have a problem and I'm not sure what to do about it. I've been dating a guy for about six months. The other day he asked me if he could borrow $500. He said he would pay it back when he got his next check.
I had no reason to distrust him, so I gave it to him. Well, ever since then we've been seeing less and less of each other. His last payday came and went without him even offering to pay me back any of the money I lent him.
I feel used. What's the best way to handle this?

Dear ATM,
First, stop referring to yourself as an ATM. You were led to believe you could trust the guy you were dating to pay you back. He didn't and therefore broke your trust.
You have several options. One, you can take him to small claims court to recover your funds, but you'll have to put more money out of your pocket to file the case. Two, you could trying sending him an e-mail reminder or visiting his workplace to inquire about the money.
Most likely, you won't get it back. If you don't, consider it a lesson learned - never let a guy you're dating borrow money from you...ever! -- The Average Guy
