What Does Being "Exclusive" Really Mean?
Bookmark and Share
Dear DDHG,

I've been going out with a guy for three months. He asked me the other day if I wanted to be exclusive. I really like him and I wasn't seeing anyone else, so I said yes. Big mistake!

A month into our supposedly exclusive relationship, he decides to start seeing another woman on the side. I asked him why he even bothered to ask me to be exclusive with him. Did I misunderstand something here? Doesn't being exclusive mean NOT dating other people?

- Non-Exclusive, Connecticut

Dear Non-Exclusive,

You didn't misunderstand anything here. Most everyone on the dating scene today knows that when you've attached the label "exclusive" to a romantic relationship you're in, it means you're not going to date other people.

You're essentially saying I think I've found the person I'm looking for and I want to see if I'm right, so I'm not going to date anyone else.

I don't know why this guy asked you to be exclusive. But since he isn't do what he asked of you, then you shouldn't feel like you're under any obligation to maintain the so-called "exclusivity" in the relationship.

In fact, since he was clearly seeing other people, you may want to rethink even being in the relationship in the first place. Good luck! - Tasha Cunningham, Tasha@DontDateHimGirl.com
