Dear DDHG,
I'm a single mother of two young boys. I've been divorced for three years and feel like it's time I get back out there and find love again.
I finally feel like I've healed from the pain of my divorce and I'm ready to move on. I tried this out recently when I dated a guy for two months. I introduced him to my sons and must to my dismay, they couldn't stand him. They wanted their dad, not the guy I was dating.
I had a long talk with them and told them I wasn't going to be with their dad again and that I would be dating from time to time. They seemed okay with it, but I'm hesitant to try my hand at dating again if this is the kind of reaction I'm going to get from them every time. What can I do?

Hi Single Mom,
First, if you're dating a guy for just two months, it's not appropriate to introduce to your kids. Think about it. In two months, you could easily break up with the guy for a variety of reasons and your kids may have already grown attached to him.
From now on, wait at least six months before introducing your guy to anyone you're dating. You've got to know that it's a serious relationship before you involve your children.
Then, take your sons and yourself to visit a therapist. Your sons need to really understand that although they want Dad to date Mom, it's not going to happen and that the new guy you're dating isn't going to take the place of their Dad in their lives. This is an important and crucial step for both you and your sons to move on with your lives. -- Tasha Cunningham
